On January 19, Olawale Ashafa, an internet technology expert resident in Ogun State, woke up to charge his phone, but saw debit alerts.
He said he had received N30,000 in his Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account the previous night, and had N29,000 in his account after N1,000 charges was deducted.
“As soon as my phone came on, I realised GT Bank had sent me a notification for N25,000 debit via email,” he told FIJ. “I had done nothing with my card in recent times, but the transaction showed that someone used my money to buy something from a non-existent client.”
Logging in to his banking app, he found his balance intact, although he could not access it.
Ashafa said he went to a GT Bank branch in Sango-Ota to complain fiercely, but the branch manager calmed him down, explaining that it was only an attempted transaction and that it had not fully taken place.
“The branch manager told me my balance was on ledger balance. He said they had not successfully withdrawn the money as it was an attempted withdrawal. He then told me to return to the bank in a week,” he said.
However, three days after visiting the bank, he received a string of text messages showing an unauthorised transaction. When he checked his account, he realised no money was in it.
“I am very sure that GT Bank is involved in this. Why did they not send me the debits the day it happened? A staff member probably used my account and withdrew my money. Then they planned a fake business name. When I checked for FLW Vitop, the recipient, Google said it didn’t exist,” he said.
When FIJ contacted Cornelius Onuoha, a GTB spokesperson, he asked our reporter to send him an email. At press time, he had not responded to the email.
